Mother's Day Flower Crafts

A Picture Just Right for Giving

by Karen & Grace Morris

Use simple materials to make Mother's Day Flower Crafts. To make this gift special think about your mom’s favorite colors. Does she like pink, blue, or yellow?

You will need to pick two complementary colors, one for the background and the other for the buttons.

Did you know that many people have button collections? If you wear button down shirts you may need a collection for when you lose one. Other people like to use them in crafts. Still, others are part of a group that collects buttons to preserve their historical significance.

If you ever get a chance go to a museum where there is a display. You might see ones made of bone, wood, or metal. They come in different shapes like stars, hearts, or even animals.

For this craft you will need;

  • Craft foam
  • Four Popsicle sticks
  • Green pipe cleaner
  • 6 small (5/8 inch) buttons
  • One medium button for center
  • Tacky glue
  • Wax paper
  • Magnetic strip with the sticky backing

Directions for The Mother's Day Flower Crafts

make stem and leaves

Cut a pipe cleaner 2 1/2 inches for the stem. Cut another piece 5 inches.  Bend the larger piece into two circles to make leaves.

make a frame

Lay the Popsicle sticks around the sides of the foam to make a frame. Draw around the sticks and cut the foam to size. Glue the sticks on the foam.

glue the leaves and stem

Glue the pipe cleaner leaves and stem to the foam.

Place the wax paper over the picture. Set a heavy object on the wax paper. I used an unabridged dictionary (I knew that there was something good for that old dictionary!).
Leave overnight.

add hanger

With a 3 inch piece of pipe cleaner make a circle. Place it on the back of your picture. Place the magnetic strip over the pipe cleaner. Now you are ready to give your picture away. It can be hung on the wall or placed on the refrigerator.

arrange buttons

Now arrange the buttons in a flower shape. Use tacky glue to glue them on the foam. (You will not need to use the dictionary this time.)

(People wear pink carnations on Mother’s Day in the United States if their mom is living. So I used pink buttons for my flower.)

I hope that your mom liked her Mother’s Day flower craft. This would also make a great gift for a grandmother. Another idea is to give one to a special teacher during teacher’s appreciation day.
